IEBC announced November 7 as the date for the polls, in a seat that was left vacant following the death of Ken Okoth, a second term MP who was serving as first MP for the region.

Kibra was partitioned in 2013 from the larger Lang'ata constituency, which was under Mr Odinga for two decades. Raila was first elected in 1992.

The orange party on Friday revealed plans to have a major rally at the constituency on Sunday, a day after interested candidates made formal applications.

"We shall this Sunday at Kamkunji grounds unveil all our aspirants to Kibra voters at a rally where they will be given a chance to address the electorate. We invite Kibera residents to the rally #MbelePamoja," wrote the party.

A senior party official, who sits in the Central Management Committee, who did not wish to be named, said Mr Odinga will arrive in the country on Saturday.

"He will be personally in Kibra where we shall unveil all our candidates. They shall address the public thereafter. It will be a mega rally and will send a strong signal," he said.

After the rally, the Central Management Committee will retreat where it will decide the method to be used in selection of the candidate.

Direct ticket, competitive nominations and consensus are among the methods being considered before the final decision is made.

Former MCA Pius Otieno, Mr Imran Okoth, ODM Youth Coordinator Benson Musungu are among those expected to contest for the party ticket.

There are also rumours that ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna may be interested and former Embakasi South MP Irshad Sumra, who lost in April by-elections.
