Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has faulted the move by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to recruit teachers as interns.
This comes after the Teachers Service Commission announced vacancies for 10,300 interns to be posted to primary and secondary schools.
Wareng KNUT secretary John Boor says the move is uncalled for and that the union will not buy the idea.
“As KNUT we will not allow teachers to be employed as interns, teachers are supposed to be employed as per the constitution that is permanent and pensionable,” said Wareng KNUT secretary John Boor.
He spoke to the press in Eldoret town on Wednesday where he called on TSC to be serious and respect teachers.
“It has never happened that teachers are employed as interns, Teachers Service Commission is heading in the wrong direction and as a union, we will not allow our teachers to be taken right, left and center,” added Boor.
He questioned the criteria TSC used to come up to with the 10,000 teachers figure that saw the commission allocate 4,300 to primary schools and 6,000 to secondary schools saying primary schools need more teachers than secondary.
TSC Chief Executive Officer Nancy Macharia has invited those qualified to send in their applications by October 23 and be ready for posting anywhere in the republic.
A total of 4,300 will be deployed in primary schools while 6,000 will be sent to secondary schools.
