The push for referendum has continued to face resistance from different quarters. A section leaders in Meru County have vowed not to back referendum.
The leaders, who spoke when they accompanied Deputy President William Ruto during his tour in the region, said that the call for a change in the constitution is a waste of time.
Led by Meru Senator Mithika Linturi, the leaders said that there are better things Kenyans can concentrate on than pushing for a referendum.
The other leaders are MPs Kubai Iringo (Igembe Central), Mugambi Rindikiri (Buuri), Kathuri Murungi (Imenti South), Charity Kathambi (Njoro), Gichumu Githinji (Gichugu), John Paul (Igembe South), Gitonga Murugara (Tharaka), Kanyuiyhia Mutunga (Tigania West), Gichunge Kabeabea (Tigania East), Halima Mucheke (nominated) and former minister Jackson Kalweo.
Linturi reiterated that Building Bridges Initiative is an exercise in futility.
The senator said that pushing for a referendum is a waste of time. He reminded leaders to concentrate on matters of development rather than rooting for a referendum.
“The initiative would lead to a referendum but only if Parliament is coerced into owning it, that will be nothing but impunity,” he said, as quoted by Capital FM
The remarks of the leaders come after ODM Leader Raila Amolo Odinga asked Kenyans to back BBI for the sake of change.
