Evangelical churches from Kiambu and Murang'a counties are proposing churches to have their own cabinet slot. Speaking on Tuesday during a prayer service at Calvary Chosen Centre in Thika, the group said it was supporting Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) that will lead to a constitutional review creating a ministry dealing with church affairs.
Led by Bishop David Ngari under the Covenant Clergy Alliance, they want their own cabinet secretary and principal secretary among other slots available in any typical ministry. They believe religious leaders should be allowed to govern their matters.
“The church should not be registered as a society as it is the case now, and should be removed from the Attorney-General’s docket and appended to a new ministry which will regulate the church in matters pertaining to religion,” Ngari said as reported by K24.
The group lauded Catholic bishops for banning cash donations in churches in a move said to protect corrupt cash getting its way to the holy churches. The bishops also warned their leadership against allowing political speeches during church service.
“As members of the clergy, we support the move by our Catholic brethren. The church has the moral authority to defeat the spirit of corruption, we should lead from the front,” he added.
