A section of politicians allied to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga have bashed their colleagues from Mt Kenya region over their stand on the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report.
On Thursday, about 40 politicians from Mt Kenya threatened to block the report implementation should it propose a referendum, to pick either the President or the PM from parliament.
They added that the changes must bring about inclusivity and address the region's issue of underrepresentation, which has landed them in trouble with forces allied to Raila.
National Assembly Majority Leader John Mbadi now says the declaration indicates that the group is working with the anti-handshake team to frustrate peace in the nation.
The Suba South lawmaker questioned their honesty with the handshake between President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila, which gave birth to the BBI and its taskforce.
He wondered how the group managed to come up with the idea that Kenyans don't want a return to the parliamentary system, yet they have not been seen collecting views from Kenyans.
“I don’t know where they have done their public hearing to know that their people don’t want a parliamentary system, unless some have a plot to scuttle the work of BBI," he said.
Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang said that "Kenya Is bigger than Mt Kenya" and politicians from the region should not he seen to compel the nation to do things to impress it.
On his side, Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi castigated the group for making premature declarations about a report which is yet to be released, and whose content remains unknown.
“Let’s not jump the gun. Let’s wait for the report to come out so that we can talk about it with authority. All these talks and ultimatums are premature," he said.
Should the group reject the report, then it will.be a major blow to Uhuru, who is both the Mt Kenya kingpin and has also vowed to push its success.
