The Nakuru County Government has announced plans to refurbish the Afraha Stadium in Nakuru Town, which is currently in a deplorable state.
According to Nakuru County Sports Executive Lucy Kariuki, the county intends to transform the facility into a sports complex of national class, at a cost of Sh4 billion.
Speaking on Friday, the sports CeC added that the job will be done in phases over a period of five years, a project that will see the stadium acquire a swimming pool.
She said that the groundbreaking ceremony will be done anytime from now, with the county intending to elevate the stadium to the level of the Moi Sports Center Kasarani.
“Ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of the ultra-modern stadium on the 23-acre piece of land will be done any time from now,” she told the Nation.
Once complete, says Kiprop Sang, one of the architects handling the design, the stadium will have among others, six media rooms and two Very Important Person (VIP) stands.
He added that the stadium's design will be inspired by the Menengai Crater, which is located several kilometres to the north of the stadium.
"The new design is inspired by an erupting Menengai Crater and cooling lava which symbolizes energetic young people playing in the field,” he added.
Other features will include an all-weather track, six changing rooms, jogging lanes, accommodation units and offices.
