Kisumu Woman Representative Rosa Buyu has weighed in on the decision by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) disputes resolution tribunal to clear former Harambee Stars forward McDonald Mariga to feature in the Kibra by-election slated for November.
Speaking on Tuesday morning during an interview on Citizen TV, the outspoken Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) legislator contended that the ruling was against the spirit of the Constitution.
"Mariga has never bothered to register as a voter in this county and therefore has never voted…The only reason he registered is because he wanted to vie in Kibra…Is that really the spirit of the law?” she posed.
Buyu went on to call for an amendment of the electoral law so as to prevent the prospect of what happened in Kibra with Mariga's case.
She took issue with the fact that veteran footballer was allowed to go and register in another constituency so as to vie in Kibra, yet the residents were not allowed to register after the constituency's seat was declared vacant.
"There is a problem and that law has to be amended," she opined.
In it's ruling, the IEBC tribunal contended that Mariga was a registered voter hence qualified to throw his hat into the Kibra race.
