A major political showdown is looming ahead of the Jubilee Party elections as allies of Deputy President William Ruto vow to ensure that the poll is conducted in March, in accordance with the party constitution.
Though the elections are slated for March, politicians allied to President Uhuru Kenyatta are keen on the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) and are reportedly pushing for the postponement of the polls.
"Jubilee Party's focus at the moment on the BBI report. We want to make sure that as many Kenyans as possible have access to the report and actually understand the report," Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu was quoted by the Star.
However, Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa is reading from a different script.
According to the vocal MP, they will never accept elections to be postponed as they are keen to get rid of "ODM elements" within the party.
"We want elections held as soon as possible so that we can get rid of some rebels creating problems within the party. Some officials who have already joined ODM but are still serving as Jubilee leaders should be shown the door," said the Kimilili lawmaker, a close Ruto ally.
His sentiment was echoed by Mumias East MP Benjamin Washiali, who is gunning for the Secretary General position.
