Nairobi governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko appeared to make a U-turn on the raging revenue allocation debate, which has heightened tensions between the national government and the county governments.
Speaking on Sunday during a church service, the Nairobi county boss called on his counterparts to heed President Uhuru Kenyatta's call to accept the funds allocated to the counties.
"MY fellow governors, for now, let's support the president and take the money that is available. Maybe in the next financial year the economy would have grown somewhat and our allocation will be increased according to what the constitution stipulates.
(Magavana wenzangu, kwa sasa, tuunge mkono rais tuchukue ile pesa iko. Maybe financial year inayokuja economy ya Kenya itakuwa imeenda juu kidogo then tutaongezewa pesa kulingana na katiba vile inasema), " Governor Sonko said.
His remarks are a departure from the position he has held on the revenue allocation issue previously, breaking ranks with other governors.
County bosses had sought to have the allocation to the counties from the national government increased, saying that the 316 billion shillings is too little.
President Uhuru said that the national government could not afford increasing the allocation, calling on governors to accept and work with what has been given to them.
