A local chief in Nyamira County has revealed why illicit alcohol trade is proliferating in Nyamira County despite the intensified crackdown.
Enchoro sub-location assistant chief Richard Mweche on Thursday in Nyantaro village claimed that the affordability of illicit liquor in deep villages makes residents venture into alcohol consumption.
"Residents have become alcohol addicts because illicit liquor is cheap. One can spend between Sh50 or Sh100 to get drunk," he said.
The chief said most residents are not aware of the dangers of alcohol consumption.
He proposed that awareness forums should be held across the county to help residents know the health dangers illicit liquor can cause.
The administrator protested the lack of a proper legal framework.
According to Mweche, illicit brewers are being released by courts with fewer fines.
"Courts are too lenient on illicit brewers, the lesser punishment given to the suspects makes the brewers continue engaging in illicit liquor business and consumption," he noted.
Mweche also pointed out that lack of collaboration between security teams and the public has promoted illicit liquor trade.
He said residents' failure to report illicit brewers to security team has made the illicit alcohol trade to grow at a fast rate.
The chief, however, vowed to fight the illicit brewers in his area of jurisdiction.
