Months after reappointment as Central Bank of Kenya boss, Governor Patrick Njoroge scooped best Central Bank award in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Njoroge won the award in 2016, before reclaiming in three years later on Monday. He's hailed for promoting best banking practices.
The annual award by GlobalMarkets magazine recognises exemplary individual effort by CBK managers across the world.
Njoroge was awarded for improvements in the banking sector in Kenya during his tenure and for helping the expansion of Kenya’s domestic capital markets.
''Njoroge has presided over a period of consolidation within the Kenyan banking sector that has helped clean up the country’s banks and vastly improve oversight over the sector. Banks have tightened their lending standards in response, thanks to the central bank’s oversight,'' GlobalMarkets said.
In a tweet, Njoroge hailed his staff members at CBK for his achievements, terming the diligent. He also dedicated the award to African youths.
"Delighted and honored to receive again the GlobalMarkets award "Sub-Saharan Africa Central Bank Governor of the Year”! I thank CBK staff for their diligent work and dedicated the award to Africa's youth," he said.
Governor Njoroge is credited for leading smooth transitioning of old Sh1000 notes to the new ones, an exercise that was linked to a strategy to fight graft.
His tenure will expire in 2023 following President Uhuru Kenyatta's decision to extend his contract in April this year.
