Since last year, the powerful minister, who had been linked to Nyamira gubernatorial race, has since expanded his territory, managing to bring together a host of leaders to his side.

With majority of MPs leaning towards DP Ruto, Matiang'i has however managed to gather governors John Nyagarama and James Ongwae, Senators Okong'o Mogeni and Sam Ongeri among other top leaders.

His recent catch include Borabu MP Ben Momanyi, who has since ditched Tanga Tanga and Woman Representative Jerusha Momanyi, another important figure.

In addition, Kisii Woman Representative Janet Ong'era has been in his camp. Kitutu Chache South MP Richard Onyonka is also the latest catch for Dr Matiang'i.

While the leaders are pushing for his candidature in 2022 polls, multiple sources hint that Dr Matiang'i's strategy to remain relevant is quite different.

According to one of the source who spoke in confidence, the powerful minister is keen to consolidate Abagusii support for his bargaining power in national politics.

"It's not about being president. He is keen to have a huge following from Abagusii for bargaining power. We expect constitutional changes where we shall have some additional posts in the executive which he shall go for," said the source.

An MCA, who is privy to Matiang'i's moves, said the minister shall go for Borabu MP seat in preparation for Deputy Prime Minister seat in the expanded cabinet.

"I understand that most cabinet ministers should be chosen from among MPs. He's plotting to go for Borabu seat and with expectations that he could be PM or DPM," he said.

Last month, Borabu MP Ben Momanyi, who is keen to succeed Governor John Nyagarama, hinted a possible entry of Matiang'i to national politics.

"He is planning to go for Deputy Prime Minister and I can assure you that. He's not interested in local politics for now," said Mr Momanyi, a second term MP.

But Matiang'i's handlers maintain that he's capable of running for president, arguing that the Abagusii community can bargain with other communities.

"We have numbers and our son is ready for the big task. We have supported other communities and this time, we are ready for the top seat," Governor Nyagarama said.
