The disease which was characterised by high-pitched cough, sneezing and low-grade fever had sparked fear among the public after it affected 52 students at the Kiambu-based school.

The Ministry of Health was notified of the students' condition on September 28. The school management had earlier, through a statement shared with the public claimed that it was working together with the ministry in arresting the situation.

Consequently, officers from the health ministry were sent to the school to investigate the matter.

The experts ruled out the possibility of the disease being infectious. They instead, concluded that the affected students were suffering from mass hysteria.

"In light of the exclusion of an infectious cause, the absence of physical causes of illness and the rapidly increasing number of affected students, the team recommended immediate psychological assessment of the girls," the statement read.

The ministry further directed for psychological tests to be conducted on the students. Doctors were sent from  Mathari Hospital to run the tests.

The experts also recommended that students and staff undergo group therapy.
