A boy has died in Nakuru while trying to rescue his dog that was drowning in a river.
The seven-year-old is said to have plunged himself into river Kapkores in Kirandich village Kuresoi South as he tried to save the dog that had slid and landed in water.
The screams of the drowning dog, villagers said, may have touched the primary school boy to dive into the river to rescue the pet.
"We heard his scream but when we rushed to the scene the water had already overpowered him," a neighbour, Wilmer Rotich, said.
Area Chief Christine Chumo, who confirmed the incident, said the boy died but the dog managed to swim out.
"We have retrieved the body of the boy after a search. It is unfortunate that he died as the dog he tried to rescue is alive," Chumo told Radio Citizen at the incident scene on Thursday.
She cautioned members of the public who are not experts in swimming to desist from plunging into rivers.
River Kapkores is among rivers in Nakuru County that recently over-flooded due to heavy rains.
