Over 70 families taking refuge at Kanyalwal Primary School in Nyakach, Kisumu County on Friday received donations of food and non food items courtesy of Ogra and Omega Foundations.

The families had fled their homes which are flooded as a result of the ongoing flooding occasioned by the El Nino rains.

The affected families each received mosquito nets, blankets, oil, soap, sugar, maize flour and salt to help them meet their domestic needs.

Ogra Foundation Director Dr Hezron McObewa said they had decided to make such an intervention to ensure the families that were displaced receive assistance.

“The mission and goal of our organisations is to help the poor and the needy. Right now, you are in need of numerous services, that is why Ogra and Omega Foundations have stepped in with the little we have,” he said.

McObewa said the flooding problem has been a menace for a long time adding that the county government and the national government must work hand in hand to ensure dykes are built to control the flooding.

Speaking while addressing the affected families, Dr McObewa announced that Ogra and Omega foundations will next week conduct a massive free medical camp at the centre to prevent or treat any waterborne diseases.

Ms Margaret Ochiel who is the Chairperson of the flood victims camping at the school thanked the two organisations for the initiative adding that women and children have been most affected.

“This donation will go a long way in alleviating hunger and diseases among those who are camping here. We are grateful for your assistance,” said Ms Ochiel.
