Sadness engulfed Thimangiri market, on the Meru-Mikinduri road, Meru County on Tuesday after three persons died following a bad road accident.
The trio was riding on a motorbike before colliding with a police car bound to Makutano Police Station in Tharaka-Nithi.
Confirming the incident Robinson Mboloi, Imenti North police commander, blamed the two riders saying they entered the road without observing if any vehicle was oncoming.
Japhet Kinyua a resident in the area refuted the claims that the two men were on the wrong side saying the one to blame for the accident was the officers since they were overspeeding and at the wrong side of the road.
He added that he had to calm the Boda Boda fellows who wanted to set ablaze the police car.
“We blame the police officer for the accident, the public wanted to set the vehicle on fire but I pleaded with the angry mob not to take the law in their hands. We took the injured to hospital using the same vehicle,” said Kinyua.
On his part Imenti North Boda Boda Association Chairman John Anthony Gikundi, blamed the government for not putting up bumps in the area claiming the area was prone to accidents.
“The stretch had more than 10 accidents in December alone, we need urgent intervention,” he said.
The three bodies were taken to Meru Level Five Hospital Mortuary.
