A teenager who on Sunday dumped her newly-born baby inside a pit latrine in Nyandarua county has confessed the same to the police, days after the baby was retrieved.
The 16-year-old had dumped the baby in a toilet at Ol Kalou town, after packing it in abed sheet and then putting it in a well-tied gunny bag.
She on Wednesday surrendered to the police in the company of her mother, who said that the girl opened up to her after several attempts to unravel the reason behind her sadness.
She said that the girl had given birth after leaving their home in Kinangop to seek casual jobs at Ol Kalou, and did not know that she was pregnant until she opened up to her.
“She left home a few months in search of casual jobs in Ol Kalou town. I never knew she was pregnant," said the 51-year-old mother.
The incident was confirmed by Nyandarua Sub County Deputy Police Commander Florence Karimi who said that the girl was remorseful after her actions.
"I have learned that she dumped her child out of desperation. She was in unstable casual jobs that could not sustain the child but she still committed an offence. I have liaised with the children’s department for guidance,” she said.
The baby was rescued by police officers who were called in by a tenant at the place where it had been dropped, and later taken to the JM Memorial Hospital in Ol Kalou Town.
