Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga on Saturday mocked Thirdway Alliance leader Ekuru Aukot's Punguza Mzigo initiative.
Speaking in Chesongoch, Elgeyo Marakwet County during the funeral of nominated MCA Johnstone Kasenge, Odinga said that the time for the Punguza Mizigo Initiative had not come.
He called on the residents to wait for the Building Bridges Initiatiative (BBI) committee to release its report to the public.
"Don't listen to other things, people telling you about Punguza Mzigo, Punguza Punda, the time for that has not come. (Msiskie mambo ingine ati wengine wanasema ati Punguza Mzigo, ati Punguza Punda, hio wakati yake bado haijakuja)," the ODM leader said. (1:23-1:34)
Raila further called on the residents to support a referendum based on the issues that will come out of the BBI report, saying that it would alter the governance structure in the country.
His intervention will come as a blow to Dr Ekuru Aukot who through his initiative had sought to significantly reduce political representation in the country while targeting resources to the grassroots.
The fate of the Thirdway Alliance leader's initiative lies with a vote that all 47 county assemblies are going to take.
The initiative has elicited mixed reactions among Kenyans.
