Renowned Kenyan footballer Allan Wanga has retired from playing international football.
The 34 year-old Kakamega Homeboyz striker made the announcement after he was left out of the Harambee Stars squad that participated in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Egypt.
While announcing his retirement, Wanga said he is glad having been given the opportunity to represent the country in various competitions in his career.
He hailed the management of the national team, and his fellow players for supporting him as he grew from strength to strength.
Wanga has, however, said that he will continue playing for his current club, and wished the national team the best of luck in their future tournaments.
"For 12 years, I have had the singular privilege and great honour to represent my country on the football pitch. Together with the support of the team, the management and the fans at large, I believe I have represented my country to the best of my ability.
"It’s now time for me to pave way for other players who I believe will embody the spirit of Harambee as I trust I did. I wish the National Team the very best in their future endeavors and now transition from the pitch to the terrace as the team’s biggest cheerleader," his statement read in part.
The national team was kicked out of AFCON after losing to Algeria, and Senegal in the group stage.
Coach Sebastien Migne opted for Al-Nasr Benghazi’s Masoud Juma, Kashiwa Reysol’s Michael Olunga, and Sofapaka’s John Avire in the attack.
The coach faced fierce criticism from different quarters following the decision to leave Wanga out of the team.
