The Democrats have failed in their attempt to call witnesses at the impeachment trial of the president of the United States of America Donald Trump, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has reported.
They required at least 4 members of the Republican party to back them in that effort but one of the Republicans who had wavered on the issue said that he would not vote for witnesses to be called after all.
Lamar Alexander, the wavering Republican, held the view that President Trump had acted in an inappropriate manner but that did not form the grounds for impeachment.
"There is no need for more evidence to prove something that has already been proven and that does not meet the United States Constitution's high bar for an impeachable offence," Lamar Alexander said as quoted by the BBC.
The Republicans enjoy a 53-47 majority in the Senate which makes it difficult for the Democrats to garner the numbers to call witnesses to the impeachment trial.
Democrats had argued that there was need to allow the witnesses to appear at the impeachment trial to prove that the president had committed impeachable offenses.
Donald Trump has denied that he committed any offence and has accused the Democrats of engaging in a political witch hunt.
