Kimilili Member of Parliament Didmus Barasa has declared his support for the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report.
Barasa said he threw his weight behind the report because it did not recommend a referendum, noting all its proposals can be implemented through constitutional amendments by way of parliamentary initiative, as contemplated under Article 256.
"Now the BBI Taskforce has avoided the divisive referendum and reckons that the issues raised can be prosecuted through the parliamentary process. I wish to declare my support for this report," he tweeted on Tuesday night.
The MP, who is a loyal supporter of Tanga Tanga faction which supports Deputy President William Ruto, said his group was opposed to a referendum, arguing it could have led to a fallout between Ruto and his boss President Uhuru Kenyatta.
"(I'm supporting BBI) Since they have ceded to our demands and avoided the tsunami that could have washed away the bridges that H.E Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto have built since 2013," Barasa added.
By quoting 'tsunami', the vocal politician was referring to sentiments made recently by ODM leader Raila Odinga when he warned Ruto and his allies, that a storm will sweep them should they oppose a referendum if recommended by the BBI report.
“There are very good views from Kenyans and once the report is out, we will publish it for Kenyans to give their views then go for a referendum. I have seen a storm, there are signs that it will rain. There’s is a storm that will take all the Tanga Tanga people to the ocean,” Raila said in late August.
