Renowned marathoner Eliud Kipchoge has been named the world male athlete of the year.

Kipchoge won the coveted prize for the second year running, coming just weeks after he pulled off a breathtaking sub 2 hour marathon run in Vienna, Austria.

Following the fete, he became the only human being to have run a full marathon in less than two hours. 

The announcement was made by World Athletics body on its Twitter handle.

In his acceptance speech, the world marathon record holder said he was happy to have made history and held out hope that his achievement would be an inspiration.

"I hope I inspire the human race. I'm just really happy to make history. I hope it was a big inspiration to the next generation, " he said as quoted by BBC

There are those who expressed confidence that Kipchoge would bag the award even before the announcement was made, saying that winning that the award was a foregone conclusion for him.

Kipchoge has cultivated, over the years, a reputation for humility and discipline, traits that have powered his rise to global stardom.

In spite of his high profile, he is known to lead a very simple life.
