Wainaina accused President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto of messing up the country's economy since they took over power from retired President Mwai Kibaki in 2013.

Wainaina, who is the executive director at the International Centre for Policy and Conflict said citizens must accept that UhuRuto's regime is Kenya's real problem and asked them to look for alternative leadership to get out of the current economic mess.

"The most critical yet painful decision that people of Kenya must accept is the UhuRuto regime is a devastating and catastrophic plague to Kenya. No denial or selective amnesia. This acceptance will make the country think and act with alternative. It is the only solution for economy mess," he said on Monday.

Expressing similar sentiments, renowned economist David Ndii noted that Kenya is in economic crisis due to the poor leadership of the Jubilee government.

The former NASA strategist argued that the country will only get on the road to recovery when Uhuru and Ruto get out of power.

"Because you refuse to hear that our economic crisis is a political problem called UHURUTO. You will not hear because you voted for them three times. When a leadership runs down a business, the first business of recovery is to change leadership. The solution is regime change," Ndii said on Monday in a response to a tweep who accused him of failing to offer economic solutions.

Kenyans have been decrying hard economic times and experts have blamed the situation on the government's huge appetite for both domestic and foreign debts which currently stands at over Sh6 trillion.
