Kenyan Premier League champions Gor Mahia Football Club are in the process of securing a new sponsor, after its old sponsor SportPesa closed shop in Kenya.
The giant betting firm on Saturday announced its exit from the Kenyan market, owing to unending battles with the government on matters revolving around taxes and licensing.
Gor on the same day announced a temporary partnership with Naivasha-based Keroche Breweries, which will finance the club's return match against Algeria's USM Alger.
Club Chairman Ambrose Rachier said talks about a shirt sponsorship for the rest of the season are in progress, with more details set to be released soon.
“We are happy that Keroche has come on board ahead of our game on Sunday but this is just the beginning. We are still in talks and hopefully by the end of the week we shall finalise and announce officially our engagement,” he said.
He made the remarks while addressing journalists at the Moi International Sports Center Kasarani.
Similar remarks were made by Keroche Corporate Affairs Director John Nyongesa, who said that Gor will receive Sh1 million for the Sunday clash.
"It is difficult to perform well on the backdrop of a financial crisis and we had to come through for Gor Mahia even as the talks for full shirt sponsorship continue. Sh600,000 will go directly to the players who are owed salaries while Sh400,000 goes to the club to cater for logistics of the match,” he said.
