Nyando Member of Parliament Jared Okello has dismissed speculations that there could be a by-election in Nairobi, following the dramatic arrest of the Governor Mike Sonko.
Speaking on Tuesday during an interview on Citizen TV, Okello said Nairobi Speaker Beatrice Elachi can be named acting governor of the county pending hearing and determination of the case.
He divulged that Elachi is mandated to assume the duties of the county boss until his fate is determined.
“Elachi can act as long as this decision still pends before the court… no election can be called at this point and time…” he posed.
He justified his argument stating that, following Sonko's arrest, a quasi vacancy was created in the county, and as such, Elachi can be named acting governor.
He also reminded leaders that no matter how long it takes , one of them can get away with a crime.
Okello argued that courts take some time but the long arm of the law never stops at any point.
“I think the bottom line is that crime has no expiry date and this is a lesson that should go to every Kenyan…” he said.
Sonko has been accused of conspiring with other officials in the government to defraud the county government Sh357 million.
He appeared in court on Monday and denied the charges leveled against him.
His bail application ruling has been set for Wednesday December 11, 2019.
