The prime minister of Bulgaria Boyko Borissov now wants the the country's football chief, Borislav Mihaylov, to step down after black England players were subjected to racist abuse by Bulgarian fans during a Euro qualifier fixture.
PM Borissov said that what happened on Monday was unacceptable, saying that his country was one of the most tolerant countries in the world.
He subjected the racist behaviour to strong condemnation.
"It is unacceptable for Bulgaria, which is one of the most tolerant countries in the world, and people of different ethnicity and religions live in peace, to be associated with racism and xenophobia, " Prime Minister Borissov said.
"I call on Borislav Mihaylov to immediately resign as president of the Bulgarian Football Union, " he addedd.
The centre referee was forced to suspend the match twice so that a warning could be issued to the fans to stop their racist chants.
England went on to win 6-0 in the Euro qualifier fixture that was played in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria.
The buildup to the match was marred by concerns about the prospect of racial outbursts.
Gary Southgate said that he had engaged his players on that prospect in a bid to prepare them psychologically.
The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) wrote on its news portal that the Prime Minister Boris Johnson had had a chance of seeing the video and that the British government was in the process of writing to UEFA for stronger action to be taken against Bulgaria.
