The Machakos County Government has been urged to desilt dams across the county ahead of the rainy season.
Machakos contractors chairman Barcleih Mutinda on Monday told journalists that several dams in the count had dried up and residents were finding it hard to get water for domestic use.
"The county government should embark on desilting dams so that they can hold enough water during the rains which are expected to begin in the coming weeks," said Kilei.
He observed that residents in some parts of Mwala are forced to spend a whole day looking for water due to the biting drought that has seen many dams dry up.
"Some are even forced to part with over SH30 for a 20-litre jerrican of water from suppliers," he said.
In Matungulu, a colonial-era dam known as Nzuna dam is also drying up. The dam which was dug in the 1930s has never dried until now. Area residents led by one Dominica Muasa are calling for its desilting.
Mutinda also called for the implementation of the school feeding programme, stating that schools are almost closing yet some schools are yet to benefit from the programme.
"We know the ministry of education has released funds meant for the feeding programme. It's a shame that the money hasn't been given to schools yet the third term is entering the home stretch," he stated.
