Children homes in Kisii County are battling fraudsters who have attempted to brainwash directors to swindle millions from American based non-governmental organizations.
On a visit to Kisii County Children's Home, a government institution at Jogoo on Wednesday, a letter seen by Hivisasa dated June 6, 2019, sent to head office in Nairobi indicated that a man only identified as Omondi fraudulently used the children's home name to recruit youths in Kisii and neighbouring counties for a training.
"I have never understood the motive this man had. We have never done any training of such kind and as a government institution, we are given programmes from head office if any. I handed the case to head office Nairobi for further action," said Joel Magovi the, home's manager.
Keumbu Holiness Children's home on Wednesday fell victim after a woman they identified as Florence Barongo's deal to solicit Sh25 million from an American NGO backfired.
According to the home's director Rev Abel Onchari who poke to Hivisasa in an exclusive interview at the institution, the suspected con-woman used the name of the children's home in a proposal for a Sh25 million donation which backfired on Wednesday after he failed to buy her idea.
"She called me yesterday and was requesting for donors to have access to the home for inspection before they release the Sh25 million readily prepared cheque. She even attempted to lure me with Sh20,000 which I rejected because I was not aware of her motive," Onchari stated.
"What shocked me, she wanted me to tell the donors that the home belongs to her. Together with my board members, we agreed to meet her today for her to shed more light, unfortunately, she switched off her phone later on after discovering we are about to push her to a corner," added Onchari.
Onchari maintained that the fraudsters are on the rise in Kisii and Nyamira. He asked the police to launch a probe into the matter.
