The programme dubbed 'Haki na Uadilifu Mashinani' will be implemented for three years by the Centre for Human Rights and Mediation (CHRM) organisation.

According to Nick Omito, the chief executive officer at CHRM, the main target group for the programme are women, especially widows.

“The widows are being trained on the provisions of the Legal Aid Act Cap 160 and on self-representation in line with the fact that widow’s face disinheritance from their male relatives and the society keeps mum about it,” said Omito, during a press briefing in Eldoret town.

He noted that the training is meant to educate widows on their property rights, adding that the beneficiaries of the programme will be used as ambassadors to spread the message to those that cannot be engaged directly in the programme.

‘’Many widows have lost property because they don’t understand the procedure to be followed in filing succession causes and also due to the fear of going through the journey of self-representation in court on succession cases which is tedious,” Omito added.

He further said that the programme would disseminate information on legal aid services to the grassroots level by setting up legal aid clinics for the benefit of the community during the sensitisation forums.
