A section of elders from the Mt Kenya region have welcomed President Uhuru Kenyatta's decision to sack Mwangi Kiunjuri from his Cabinet, where he served as Agriculture Cabinet Secretary.
Kiunjuri was on Tuesday relieved off his duties, with the president strategically bringing in Betty Maina and Mutahi Kagwe to seal the loopholes, a decision which has been backed by elders.
Through their Secretary General Peter Munga, the elders accused Kiunjuri of frustrating the President's Big Four development agenda, adding that he has no one but himself to blame for the sacking.
“He frustrated the President on a number of occasions. The cartels the President talked about thrived in his ministry,” he added.
According to Munga, Kiunjuri should not have engaged in blatant political activities as a Cabinet Secretary.
“He had the audacity of organising a press conference with MPs from Central Kenya who are critics of the President. We were wondering why he was being tolerated because he should have been fired a long time ago,” the elder said.
A confident Kiunjuri said he doesn't regret his sacking, adding that he had done his best.
“I have courage, determination and faith, knowing that it will be bumpy and challenging. I shall remain independent, principled and firm as I have been throughout my political career,” he said in Nanyuki.
