Advancement in technology has created a platform for exploration, with Kenyan youth being part and parcel of the current wave of technology enhanced development initiatives.
In Siaya County, a section of youth are riding high on international space through an online Radio, with audience coming in thick and fast from across the world.
The Bondo Youth Friendly Centre Radio is stationed at the Bondo Sub-County hospital with the aim of reaching young people with sexual rights information.
In the studio, the medium has two computers, two microphones, a console (mixer) and a speaker but unlike the normal Frequency Modulation (FM) Radio station, it lacks a frequency.
This means one can only listen to the Radio online, via byfc.blogspot.com. However, presenters can receive calls just like in a normal Radio station.
According to Bondo Youth Friendly Centre Coordinator Didan Amollo, they interact with their fans through a variety of social media platforms, among them Facebook, WhatsApp and Twitter.
“Our content and programming entirely depends on trending issues that affect most of the youth,” he said. The Radio has been operational for more than six months.
All the 11 presenters are form leavers, college and university graduates and students, who work on a voluntary basis. “The youth who host shows here have not undergone journalism training. They are doing it out of passion,” said Pascal Oduor, one of the Presenters.
Oduor who hosts the Raggae Vybz Show from 4PM-6PM Monday to Friday is a third year clinical medicine student at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC), Bondo Campus.
