Water in the area has been contaminated by an oil leak from the Changamwe Oil refinery.

Residents say the usage of the water has caused them to suffer from skin irritation.

"When you take a shower, you feel itchy. (Ukioga unashindwa ni nini. Kumbe ni maji yako na mafuta)," Juma Mwadime, a resident of Bahati Estate in Jomvu says.

The contamination of the water sources in Jomvu has been confirmed by the National Environmental Authority (NEMA) which says that the water in the area has been contaminated with hydrocarbons, making it unfit for human consumption.

"Kenya Pipeline experts have determined that the water is contaminated with oil of some kind. We did not have the ability to know whether it was kerosene or petrol at that time. (Kwa kweli kutumia maexperts wa Kenya Pipeline waliweza kutambua hiyo maji imeweza kuchanganyika na mafuta fulani. Hatukuwa na uwezo wa kusema ni petrol au kerosene wakati huo.), " Stephen Wambua, the NEMA director in Mombasa told K24 Television on Sunday.

Samples of the contaminated water have been taken by NEMA officials for testing even as efforts at determining the exact point where the leakage occurred continue apace.
