Political embers are expected to flairs in Mombasa during the 2022 election in the Governor Hassan Joho succession race.
Joho, who has been at the helm of the port county, will leave office after the next general election, leaving the coveted seat up for grabs among the who is who in Mombasa politics.
Being the face of Coast politics, Joho remains a decisive figure in his succession race, and may be, whoever gets his blessings will carry the day.
Kisauni MP Ali Mbogo, has so far emerged as the top contender for the seat. His political networks within the county will no doubt be his major asset even as he gears to become the second Governor of Mombasa.
Further, his huge financial muscle may give a precious head- start going into that rivalry. But could his associations with Deputy President William Ruto cost him the seat?
And in a county where ODM leader Raila Odinga enjoys huge following, should the lawmaker consider cutting his links with the DP and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka for the former Prime Minister?
Then there is Mvita MP Abdulswamad Sharrif Nassir. A key Joho ally, on paper, he is the favourite to win the seat by the virtue of being in ODM.
Besides that, his political big name gives him an upper hand to pip his rivals for the top seat. But it will not be a walk in the park.
Whatever happens by 2022 remains to be seen. But if they play their political card very well, either Mbogo or Nassir will be the next Mombasa Governor.
However, any Joho will change the game completely!!
