Speaking on Sunday, the former presidential hopeful said that his party had realised the same, hence the proposed shift of the role to the Auditor-General in its referendum push.

He claimed that the agency has been successfully hijacked by politicians and is being used to for political reasons, likening the Eliud Wabukala-led body to "a political flower girl'.

"Investigating corruption in this country is lucrative. That is why we are strengthening the office of the Auditor-General with a forensics department. The EACC  is not working for me; it is a political flower girl," he said on K24's Punchline show.

Aukot also stressed on the need for the introduction of very stern punitive measures for those convicted of corruption.

The calls come at a time when many such cases involving top state and county officials are before the court, among them that of ex-National Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich.

Aukot said that to deal with the menace, Punguza Mizigo wants such elements condemned to life imprisonment if found to have stolen from public coffers.

"For those convicted of stealing public money, we are proposing mandatory life sentences," added the constitutional lawyer.
