Police in Kirinyaga county are investigating an incident where a man reportedly committed suicide in one of the county public hospitals, moments after chopping off his hand.
The 40-year-old is said to have commited suicide by hanging himself in the toilet, even though medics at the Kerugoya Referral Hospital had succeeded in reattaching his hand.
The incident was confirmed by Kirinyaga Central OCPD Doreen Oduor, who on Thursday said the man hanged himself using a medical intravenous giving set.
The police boss also said the initial incident at home, where he chopped of his left hand, was his first suicidal attempt.
She added that the man also attempted to detach the hand after being reattached, and was responding well to medication after the reattachment.
According the elder sister of the deceased, he had been appearing disturbed lately.
However, the police are yet to establish the actual cause behind the suicide.
The body of the deceased was moved to the Kerugoya Referral Hospital Mortuary.
The incident comes barely two weeks after another man committed suicide in the same county, after killing his girlfriend.
In the December 19, 2019, incident, Samwel Kiama allegedly murdered his lover Caroline Mbote, a police officer, before hanging himself in her house near the Kianyaga Police Post.
Police reports seen by the people daily indicate that the suspected killer could have hit the woman with a blunt object, on suspicion that she was cheating on him.
“Mbote had an injury in the head with blood splattered all over her face. It is suspected she was hit with a blunt object,” reads the report.
