Police in Meru County have launched a probe of an incident where a police officer allegedly shot a man to death before turning rifle on himself.
The sad incident occurred on Thursday evening when Julius Mwenda was shot while recording a statement at Kunati Police Post.
Mwenda had gone to record a statement after engaging in a fight with a police officer Murithi (who shot him at the station) in Kunati market, Tigania Central.
According to Meru Police Commander Patrick Lumumba, Mwenda lost his lifer while being rushed to hospital.
"He was reporting the incident at the OB desk when the police officer appeared and shot him. He was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival,"noted Lumumba.
Mwenda's brother, James Kiunga said his brother was arrested by other police officers who took him to the station where he was shot while recording a statement at the OB desk.
"We are informed that he was arrested by other police officers, who took him to the police post. The officer pursued them, took a gun and shot him at the OB desk," he said.
The officer is said to have shot in the air before disappearing and was found in his house on Friday dead after shooting himself.
The bodies were taken to Meru Level Five Hospital mortuary.
