The speaker of the Senate Ken Lusaka has lashed out at chiefs who are giving their relatives first priority in the application for the census jobs.
Speaking on Friday in Bungoma, a visibly angry Lusaka called on the chiefs to leave the census jobs to families whose members don't have jobs.
He noted that administrators giving their relatives jobs do not deserve to be leaders.
"I cannot believe ati chief anaweza kuandika watoto wake watatu. Sad news. If it is true that fellow does not deserve to be a leader, " the Senate speaker said in a YouTube video shared by MagicalKenyanews. (video 0:22-0:44)
Kenyans have been applying for the census jobs that have been advertised by the government ahead of a national census that is carried out once every ten years.
A debate on whether those who have jobs can apply has been raging.
Gatundu South Member of Parliament Moses Kuria is one of the high profile figures who have argued that the jobs should be left to the unemployed.
"It is saddening to see School Principals, Civil Servants and other Senior Government Officials applying for leave in the month of August to take up jobs as Census enumerators. This census is not just a census. It’s supposed to be a youth empowerment exercise. Leave these jobs to our millions of unemployed youth, " Kuria posted on Facebook.
