Four years after the deadly Al-Shabaab attack claimed the lives of over 147 students, Garissa University held its first ever graduation ceremony on Thursday.
Garissa Township MP Aden Duale and a host of politicians and leaders presided over the graduation that saw 133 graduates conferred with Bachelor’s Degrees and Diplomas.
In his message, Duale praised the university's resilience, especially after the deadly 2015 terror attack.
“Garissa University has come a long way. Since inception, the university has faced enormous challenges of financial inadequacy, yet it has remained resilient and eventual triumphant leading to this graduation,” Duale tweeted.
Duale added: “Garissa University has uniquely prepared the graduates for the world, equipping them with knowledge, skills and the right attitude for the contemporary life and work etiquette.”
The Garissa lawmaker urged the varsity's management to remain innovative and enhance consultation with all stakeholders to ensure up to date interventions in handling insecurity and cases of violent extremism which he said remain a global challenge.
The National Assembly Leader of Majority pledged to push for additional funding to the university and also forge partnerships for resources mobilization.
This year's graduation is a massive boost for the institution that has been struggling to assure scholars that the campus is safe and conducive for studies.
