Fishermen from Uhoma Beach in Bondo, Siaya county, have called for the intervention of the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) following the latest crocodile attack in the region.
This comes after an attack that left area fisherman Lawrence Otieno, who had gone for a fishing expedition in Lake Victoria on Tuesday night, never to return home.
According to area Assistant Chief Manase Osuru, the alarm was raised by the wife of the deceased Eunice Atieno after he failed to report back home on Wednesday morning.
The administrator added that the same resulted in a search that saw the body found about 100 metres from the place where he had left his clothes, badly mauled by a crocodile.
"We launched a search on Thursday morning after the deceased’s wife reported that her husband was missing after he had gone fishing,” said the administrator.
Speaking on Thursday, fishermen decried increased cases of such kind and now want the crocodiles removed from the area, claiming that they are not benefiting them in any way. They also called for the relocation of the KWS station from Siaya to a place nearer to the lake.
"The KWS officers are based in Siaya and it becomes very difficult to reach when crocodiles and hippos attack. We are therefore requesting the government to relocate the station near the lake," said a resident.
