Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jnr has called for Kenya to raise its voice against the latest episode of xenophobic violence unfolding in South Africa.
In a tweet on Wednesday, the outspoken legislator called for economic sanctions to be placed on South Africa and people to boycott South African goods.
He contended that radical steps against South Africa would send a clear message to the country.
"Kenya must stand up to counted on the barbaric attacks on Kenyans & other African brothers &sisters .We sang “Release , release Mandela Africa shall be free”in 1992 for a good cause ! Economic sanctions , boycotts of South African shops, goods etc will send a clear message,"he tweeted.
His strong intervention comes amid a string of shocking images and videos of the scale of the violence.
Marauding youths wielding machetes have reportedly been targeting the businesses of foreigners who have invested in South Africa.
This is not the first time the Southern Africa nation has been convulsed by outbreaks of xenophobic mayhem.
In a bid to placate African countries whose citizens have been affected by the violence, the South African government under President Cyril Ramaphosa said it would take strong action to stop the violence.
