Enchoro sub-location chief Richard Mweche has fired warning shots at residents engaging in the illicit brew business.
Speaking on Thursday when he led a team of Nyumba Kumi officials in destroying over 600 litres of illicit brew in Nyantaro village on Thursday, the chief raised concerns over the increasing cases of crime in the area, arguing that several youths have opted to steal in order to get money to buy the alcohol.
"Cases of livestock theft in the area are at the peak because of the illicit brew business. I will not sit and watch as residents turn out to be alcohol addicts," said the chief.
The local administrator reiterated the need for members of the public to register groups and take advantage of government loans to start small legal businesses in a bid to earn a living instead of engaging in outlawed businesses.
Mweche pointed out that the local brew commonly known as 'busaa' has not been legalised by the government, noting that anyone found making the brew will not be spared by the law.
"One suspect has been arrested for making the local brew and will be arraigned in court on Friday. In Enchoro sub-location it will not be business as usual until the illicit brewers are flushed out," he added.
