Members of Parliament (MPs) have queried use of Sh150bn insurance cover. The lawmakers have raised concern over funds the government has been allocating under Group Personal Accident (GPA) policy and Work Injury Benefits Act.
This is after it emerged that the government has been setting aside Sh.15 billion annually towards the fund but the amount cannot be accounted for by the officers tasked with the same.
Reports indicated that the billions, which were disbursed by the National Treasury as insurance cover for public servants, are yet to benefit anyone in the government. Parliamentarians now want to know how the funds have been utilized as well as the names of the beneficiaries for the sake of setting the records straight.
The amount, which is 2.25 percent of the annual wages of employees of the government, is expected to benefit Kenyans but it seems that has not been happening. It has been revealed that Sh694.981 billion was collected in 2018. The new development implies that persons who died while in line of duty from 2009 are expected to be beneficiaries.
“Any claim is required to be reported by the insured, dependants or nominees in writing and submitted within a year of the injury or death,” the manual reads, as quoted by Daily Nation.
Public Accounts Committee (PAC) Chairman Opiyo Wandayi has said that the parliamentarians are ready to follow up the matter until the truth comes out at the end of the day.
