For three days now, the name of Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has been on everyone's lips. Why? Because he is battling corruption allegations alongside several others. But is this really the end of his political career?
As much as many could not be in agreement with his brand of politics, dismissing Sonko in the political arena is not something one would want to do. Why? For nine years he has been in politics has mastered the game. He is a smart political survivor and thrives best where others have written his political obituary.
After his fallout with NARC Kenya party leader, Martha Karua, Sonko swiftly ditched the flower party. Doing that at such an early stage of his political career is suicidal. But did it bother him? In fact, his popularity soared. By stoking the emotions of his supporters, he became like a political victim. From there, he scored big.
In 2013, at the height of his popularity, he won the seat with ease, by once again felling a political giant.
With his loyal support base, Sonko headed into the 2017 poll as an underdog. There, he was to face off, first, with former Gatanga MP, a respected technocrat-cum politician, Peter Kenneth. He confirmed his political might when he thrashed Kenneth. The defender of the poor was simply unstoppable.
After sending home former Nairobi Governor, Evans Kidero, Sonko stamped his authority in city politicians. In the history of Nairobi politics, probably only ODM party leader Raila Odinga has dominated the county for long. And today, Sonko is probably the new sheriff in town.
Sonko's biggest political asset is probably his ability to turn every situation into a political victory. And on this particular court case, Sonko could walk out even more popular.
For now, he may have been cornered, but he could bounce back strongly. No man confirms the proverbial nine lives of a cat better than Sonko.
