Political analyst Ambrose Weda has poured cold water on the suggestions that President Uhuru Kenyatta should consider prolonging his stay in power after his retirement in 2022.

Among those holding the idea is former Jubilee Vice Chair David Murathe, who is also considered a confidant of the President,  argues that Uhuru must stick around.

But Weda, also an ally of the president and a High Court advocate has dismissed the calls, terming them more personal than intended to benefit the country.

He says that the calls are coming from forces surrounding the president, who are uncomfortable with his exit, feeling that it will leave them in the hand of a leader they don't like.

"Uhuru's exit will leave behind orphans and this could be the reason behind remarks like Honorable Murathe's," he said on KBC English Service's The Big Conversation on Wednesday.

The Lake Basin Development Authority (LBDA) board chair observed that the calls are most unlikely a demonstration of Uhuru's stand on the entire debate about extending his leadership.

This he based on the fact that the president has remained silent on the remarks, also not showing any indication of being interested in a continued stay in office.

"Uhuru has not given any indication that he wants to remain in office," he added.

Similar remarks have been made by Nominated Senator Beth Mugo and former Kwanza MP Noah Wekesa, who have termed Uhuru too young to retire.
