Police in Eldoret in conjunction with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) on Monday conducted a crackdown on vehicles overcharging customers.
They moved from one Matatu Sacco to another and passengers who were overcharged their extra transport on the normal charges were refunded.
National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) North Rift Regional Manager Mohamed Khamsin who led the exercise said their aim is to ensure that passengers are not overcharged during this rush hour season where they are travelling back to urban areas.
“We want to warn Matatu and bus Saccos which have increased fare that they will be arrested and charged thereafter their licenses revoked for overcharging passengers, how can you charge one 1500 from Eldoret to Nairobi instead of Sh 800,” said Khamsin.
Khamsin who spoke to the press during the exercise in Eldoret town on Monday said the exercise will continue until they stop overcharging passengers.
Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Johnston Ipara called on those involved in the matatu business to ensure that passengers are only charged the set amount an don’t anything extra.
“Anyone whatsoever who will be found overcharging passengers will be arrested and charged for going against the traffic rules,” added the Uasin Gishu County commander.
He, however, called on passengers not to accept to pay extra fare failure to which they will also be arrested for working with matatu owners to infringe rights of passengers.
