Elizabeth Kerubo was arrested by police officers at her home in Esani village in Masaba North, Nyamira County on Monday during a crackdown on illicit brewers.

Kerubo was arraigned before Keroka Law Courts Magistrate Betwel Kiplagat.

The prosecution told the court that the woman was arrested in possession of 40 litres of chang'aa.

She pleaded guilty to the charges and appealed to the magistrate to be lenient when issuing the judgement on grounds that she has young children who depend on her.

The magistrate, however, dismissed her plea and ruled that the accused cannot be released on bond.

In his ruling, Magistrate Kiplagat noted that the making, selling, distribution and consumption of illicit brew is on the rise, adding that the accused should spend six months in jail to serve as an example to other illicit brewers who are still engaging in the illegal business.

This comes after Nyamira County Commissioner Amos Mariba assured residents that the crackdown on illicit brewers across the county has been intensified to ensure no one is engaging in the outlawed businesses.
