The perceived leadership crisis in Nairobi County seems to persist after the Nairobi County Assembly deferred the debate on the nomination of Ann Mwenda Kanuna as Governor Mike Sonko’s deputy.
Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Beatrice Elachi said that the MCAs will not vet or debate the nomination until she gets further direction from the office of the Attorney-General on the matter.
Elachi said that the county assembly will discuss the issue on Thursday as they wait for direction from the AG.
She also questioned the legality of the nomination after the court barred Sonko from accessing his offices to serve the people of Nairobi.
Elachi confirmed that the name of the nominee had been officially presented to her ahead of the vetting process.
“I have received the nomination as every office has to but we need to follow the procedure of how we will reply back. I will only pronounce myself on the deputy governor position in line with the Jubilee Party and the law once the assembly resumes from recess on February 15,” said Elachi.
While naming his deputy, Sonko asked the county assembly to approve her name for the smooth running of the affairs of the area.
He also said he is ready to abide by the bail term given by the court. DPP Nordin Haji has said that Sonko has no powers to name a deputy at the moment.
