The president has been facing a number of challenges, with Al-Shabaab's increased attacks almost threatening to break the country apart.

For the last two weeks, Al-Shabaab militants have attacked several regions within Somalia, despite United States of America and AMISOM support.

According to Voice of America journalist Harun Maruf, Mr Farmaajo, who studied in the US, consulted constitutional experts and authorities from Somalia and US.

"Somalia President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo renounces his United States citizenship despite Somalia constitution allowing for dual citizenship. Statement says legal experts, and nationalities and citizenship authorities from Somalia and US were involved in the process," he said.

The decision means that Farmaajo will no longer enjoy immunity from the US. Farmaajo has been a key ally of US and Kenya, a move which could cause panic in the two countries.

Apparently, his decision to quit US comes at a time when Jubbaland semi autonomous region is planning to go for an election. President Sheikh Ahmed Madobe is facing a stiff competition.

Reports from Somalia indicate that Farmaajo, is now supporting a rival candidate in Jubbaland, despite Madobe being a key ally if Kenya and US.

Garad Ali Garaad, another influential elder, said a regime change is necessary “in order to open Jubbaland to development”.
