The County Government of Garissa has been lauded for its commitment to availing quality healthcare to residents and the strides made in the county's health sector.
Unicef Country Representative Manisa Zamon said Garissa has witnessed tremendous progress in the healthcare sector which saw the county awarded for its efforts.
Zamon said the county is focused on ensuring it improves the health sector so as to provide quality and affordable services to residents.
Speaking in Garissa on Wednesday, Zamon urged the county government to put more emphasis on preventive health to promote a healthy society.
She further urged the county government to put measures that will reduce early marriages and Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) with the aim of protecting women and young girls.
“I am pleased by the achievements made by Garissa County in the immunisation programme and other key sectors where the county and Unicef were partners,” said Zamon.
Zamon was received by Garissa Deputy Governor Abdi Dagane in his office on Wednesday.
On his part, Dagane thanked Unicef for partnering with the county in different sectors including education, water, energy, special programmes and the Department of Economic planning.
He, however, said the county still needs assistance as most of the residents are faced with drought and are in dire need of water and food.
Dagane said they will need help to transport water to affected schools and areas as the failure of the long rains has forced thousands of residents to stare at hunger and starvation.
“The county pumped half of its budget in the water sector during the last financial year but challenges continued to exist,” said the deputy governor.
