Speaking on Citizen TV Wednesday night, Atwoli termed the sack talk as fake news.

"I was not fired from the KCB Board. That is fake news. I have never been a director in Kenya Commercial Bank," he responded.

Atwoli was axed from NBK board after Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) took over the management of the institution. He maintained that he resigned from his position.

Speaking after the reshuffle of the board, KCB Group chairman Andrew Wambari Kairu said that the changes were aimed at returning the institution to profitability.

“Corporate governance is of utmost priority for us and the structure of the board and management is important in ensuring that the level of corporate governance you expect is maintained,” he said in a statement.

Atwoli had served as an NBK board member for over a decade occupying one of the two slots reserved for National Health Insurance.

His role was to protect the interests of workers. Jones Makau Nzomo and Linnet Mirehane who served in the NBK board were retained.

“We must continue to strengthen and enhance our oversight and risk management practices, which are essential cogs in the banking sector to meet the expectations of our regulators, protect, and serve the interests of our stakeholders," Kairu added.
